Learn Cantonese Language

Hong Kong laws states that English and Chinese are the official languages, but does not state which form of Chinese. Whereas Mandarin and Simplied Chinese characters are the standard in the People's Republic of China, Cantonese and traditional Chinese characters are the de facto standards in Hong Kong.

A curated Cantonese word frequency list

Are you looking for unconventional ways to speed up the process of learning Cantonese? Then this book is exactly what you are looking for. Following the Pareto principle (80/20 rule), this book is built to streamline the learning process by concentrating on the core words and sentence structures that make up everyday conversations. The result is a unique vocabulary book with 2000 of the most important Cantonese words and phrases ordered by their frequency of use.

Who this Cantonese learning book is for:

This book is for beginners and intermediate learners of Cantonese who are self-motivated and willing to spend 15 to 20 minutes a day on learning vocabularies. The simple structure of this vocabulary book is the result of taking all unnecessary things out allowing the learning effort to solely be spent on the parts that help you make the biggest progress in the shortest amount of time. If you are willing to put in 20 minutes of learning every day, this book is very likely the single best investment you can make if you are at a beginner or intermediate level. You will be amazed at the speed of progress within a matter of just weeks of daily practice.

Who this Cantonese frequency list is not for:

This book is not for you if you are an advanced learner of Cantonese. In this case, please go to our website or search for our Cantonese vocabulary book which comes with more vocabularies and is grouped by topic which is ideal for advanced learners who want to improve their language capabilities in certain fields.
Furthermore, if you are looking for an all in one Cantonese learning book that guides you through the various steps of learning Cantonese, this book is most likely also not what you are looking for. This book contains vocabularies only and we expect buyers to learn things like grammar and pronunciation either from other sources or through language courses. The strength of this book is its focus on quick acquisition of core vocabularies which comes at the expense of information many people might expect in a conventional language learning book. Please be aware of this when making the purchase.

How to use this Cantonese workbook:

This book is ideally used on a daily basis, reviewing a set number of pages in each session. The book is split into sections of 25 vocabularies which allows you to step by step progress through the book. Let’s for example say you are currently reviewing vocabularies 101 to 200. Once you know vocabularies 101 to 125 very well, you can start learning vocabularies 201 to 225 and on the next day skip 101-125 and continue reviewing vocabularies 126 to 225. This way, step by step, you will work your way through the book and your language skills will jump with each page you master.

Some final thoughts:

Like many language hacking methods, this book is quite unconventional in its approach, but for a driven person that uses it correctly it can significantly speed up the learning process. Vocabulary books have been around for centuries and as with so many things that have been around for some time, they are not very fashionable and a bit boring, but they usually work quite well – and that is what counts in the end.

How to Fail at Cantonese: A Beginner's Guide

By Joe Woodard

Released: 2019-02-28
Kindle Edition (113 pages)

How to Fail at Cantonese: A Beginner s Guide

Product Description:

(Paperback edition and Kindle update TBA soon.)

Before you start reading, I'd suggest you simply go to the Table of Contents, and tap the topic that's most interesting to you. Each chapter contributes to the whole, but can also be read by itself, so you can go through it in any order you want.

I wrote this book to give you practical insights, surprising revelations, and a deep sense that you're not alone in the struggle to learn this language!

If you're on this page, then you've probably asked the question "How can I learn Cantonese?". And you've probably gotten advice like this:

  • ”Just watch TV with English subtitles.”
  • ”Immerse yourself--you’ll pick it up naturally!”
  • ”Do a language exchange.”
  • ”Try to only speak Cantonese!”
  • ”Find a situation that requires Cantonese."
  • ”Download some apps.”
  • ”Get a Cantonese-speaking girlfriend." Or even,
  • ”Learn Mandarin instead!”

How to Fail at Cantonese: A Beginner's Guide explains why this kind of advice can be misguided, and shows you that there's no one-size-fits-all solution to learning a language. But in the process of learning "how to fail", you will also be empowered to build your own road to success!

Praise from Cantonese teachers (and other polyglots!)

"Cantonese is one of the hardest languages to learn in the world not because it's intrinsically harder than any language, but because of the unique challenges learners face that don't usually apply to other languages. In "How to Fail at Cantonese", Joe breaks down some of the most common mistakes, gotchas and pitfalls you'll most likely encounter, but more importantly, how to avoid them. Written in a direct, no-BS style, this guide is a must read for anyone thinking of or currently learning Cantonese!"

--Baggio Wong, Founder, Cantolounge Academy, cantolounge.com

"Joe is one of the most successful Cantonese learners I’ve ever known, and I appreciate how his attitude and enthusiasm in language learning is always maintained along the way...

There is a famous saying attributed to Charlemagne, the 9th-century Holy Roman Emperor: "To have a second language is to have a second soul". What a strong statement to motivate people to learn another language! The problem, though, is that it can be quite challenging to decide what works for you to learn. But it's worth the effort! And the process also gives you the opportunity to reflect on other important questions like: “Why do other people think differently?”; “How could I think differently?”; and, “How can we communicate with understanding and respect?”

Just keep trying, exploring, and you will finally get there!"

--Ms. Crystal Zheng, Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education

The reason you can trust Joe and the advice in his book is for one simple reason. He has actually learned Cantonese as a second language, as an adult, and he isn't coming from a position of giving generic advice that native speakers give.

That's important, because, let's face it--native speakers of any language don't usually understand the specific struggles that non-native learners have to deal with. But Joe understands how to deal with unique problems that learning Cantonese entails, and his experience really comes through in this book.

Split into small digestible chapters using a humorous writing style, he goes through all of the biggest misconceptions, myths, and even downright harmful advice. And he tells you exactly why they might not be the best strategy for you.

This is definitely worth a read if you are looking at getting into learning Cantonese, or any other language for that matter."

--Luke Truman, Founder of Full-Time Fluency, fulltimefluency.com

The Easiest and Fastest Way to Learn Chinese Cantonese
Whether you want to travel, communicate with friends or colleagues, reconnect with family, or just understand more of what’s going on in the world around you, learning Cantonese will expand your horizons and immeasurably enrich your life.

The best part is that it doesn’t have to be difficult or take years to master. Thirty minutes a day is all it takes, and we get you speaking right from the first day. Pimsleur courses use a scientifically-proven method that puts you in control of your learning. If you’ve tried other language learning methods but found they simply didn’t stick, then you owe it to yourself to give Pimsleur a try.

Why Pimsleur?
- Quick + Easy – Only 30 minutes a day.
- Portable + Flexible – Core lessons can be done anytime, anywhere, and easily fit into your busy life.
- Proven Method – Works when other methods fail.
- Self-Paced – Go fast or go slow – it’s up to you.
- Based in Science – Developed using proven research on memory and learning.
- Cost-effective – Less expensive than classes or immersion, and features all native speakers.
- Genius – Triggers your brain’s natural aptitude to learn.
- Works for everyone – Recommended for ages 13 and above.

What’s Included?
- 30, 30-minute audio lessons
- 60 minutes of recorded Notes to provide you some insight into Cantonese Chinese culture
- In total, 16 hours of audio, all featuring native speakers
- a Notes Booklet and a User’s Guide

What You’ll Learn
In the first 10 lessons, you’ll cover the basics: saying hello, asking for or giving information, scheduling a meal or a meeting, asking for or giving basic directions, and much more. You’ll be able to handle minimum courtesy requirements, understand much of what you hear, and be understood at a beginning level, but with near-native pronunciation skills.

In the next 10 lessons, you’ll build on what you’ve learned. Expand your menu, increase your scheduling abilities from general to specific, start to deal with currency and exchanging money, refine your conversations and add over a hundred new vocabulary items. You’ll understand more of what you hear, and be able to participate with speech that is smoother and more confident.

In the final 10 lessons, you’ll be speaking and understanding at an intermediate level. In this phase, more directions are given in the Cantonese language, which moves your learning to a whole new plane. Lessons include shopping, visiting friends, going to a restaurant, plans for the evening, car trips, and talking about family. You’ll be able to speak comfortably about things that happened in the past and make plans for the future.

One hour of recorded Notes are included at the end of Unit 30. These notes are designed to provide you with some insight into Chinese culture. A Notes Booklet is also included in PDF format.

The Pimsleur Method
We make no secret of what makes this powerful method work so well. Paul Pimsleur spent his career researching and perfecting the precise elements anyone can use to learn a language quickly and easily. Here are a few of his “secrets”:

The Principle of Anticipation
In the nanosecond between a cue and your response, your brain has to work to come up with the right word. Having to do this boosts retention, and cements the word in your mind.

Core Vocabulary
Words, phrases, and sentences are selected for their usefulness in everyday conversation. We don’t overwhelm you with too much, but steadily increase your ability with every lesson.

Graduated Interval Recall
Reminders of new words and structures come up at the exact interval for maximum retention and storage into your long-term memory.

Organic Learning
You work on multiple aspects of the language simultaneously. We integrate grammar, vocabulary, rhythm, melody, and intonation into every lesson, which allows you to experience the language as a living, expressive form of human culture.

Learning in Context
Research has shown that learning new words in context dramatically accelerates your ability to remember. Every scene in every Pimsleur lesson is set inside a conversation between two people. There are no drills, and no memorization necessary for success.

Active Participation
The Pimsleur Method + active learner participation = success. This method works with every language and every learner who follows it. You gain the power to recall and use what you know, and to add new words easily, exactly as you do in English.

The Cantonese Chinese Language
Cantonese, one of several major languages in China, is mainly spoken in Hong Kong, Guangdong, the Guangxi provinces, and in most overseas Chinese communities in Australia, Europe, and North America. Pimsleur's Chinese Cantonese teaches Cantonese as spoken in Hong Kong.

Tech Talk
- CDs are formatted for playing in all CD players, including car players, and users can copy files for use in iTunes or Windows Media Player.
